At level 55 in Modern Warfare 4 you choose between Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige. Classic resets your unlocks for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. Regular sends you back to level 1 but keeps everything you've unlocked. You choose again at every Prestige.
It's the first Call of Duty to give you both, and the choice isn't permanent, so the question is really which one suits the next 55 levels. There are ten Prestiges, then Prestige Master runs all the way to level 1,000. Checked against Activision's Ready for Launch progression post.
Classic or Regular
Classic Prestige versus Regular Prestige
Most of the Prestige rewards are shared by both paths. Classic adds bonus cosmetics and its own version of each Prestige's final reward, usually a "Prime" variant, as the payoff for starting over.
Which one to pick
- Pick Classic if you're grinding straight back to 55 and want the Classic-track finals. The 20% boost runs on every bit of XP you earn, and the token keeps your one essential unlock.
- Pick Regular if you play casually, rotate classes, or just don't want to lose your loadouts for a level number.
- Switch whenever: you choose again at the start of every Prestige, so a Classic run now doesn't lock you in.
Spend the token on a perk, not a gun
The Permanent Unlock Token keeps one level unlock available through every future Classic reset. Activision's own advice is to spend it on a Perk, Field Upgrade, Killstreak or piece of Equipment rather than a weapon.
The reason: any Weapon Blueprint you get from the Store or a Battle Pass permanently unlocks that weapon's base version too. Guns come back other ways. A late perk like Kill Chain or a top Killstreak doesn't.
What each Prestige pays
Every Prestige pays a reward every ten levels, themed on a different Infinity Ward game. Prestige 1 goes back to Call of Duty (2003): the Sandstorm Operator skin instantly, then a loading screen, emblem, charm and decal from 10 to 40, and a Mosin-Nagant blueprint at 50.
| Prestige | Inspired by | Final reward (Regular / Classic) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Call of Duty (2003) | Mosin-Nagant: The Vet / The Vet Prime |
| 2 | Call of Duty 2 | PPSh-41: Calm Resolve / Trench Fiend |
| 3 | Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare | SAS skin: Watchtower / Watchtower Prime |
| 4 | Modern Warfare 2 (2009) | Finn LMG: Terminal / Torn Up |
| 5 | Modern Warfare 3 (2011) | Army SF skin: Razor One / Razor One Prime |
| 6 | Ghosts | Axion: Ghosts Legend / Ghosts Legend Prime |
| 7 | Infinite Warfare | Army SF skin: Warfighter / Warfighter Prime |
| 8 | Modern Warfare (2019) | M4: 141 / 141 Prime |
| 9 | Modern Warfare II (2022) | Reece skin: Sable / Sable Prime |
| 10 | Modern Warfare 4 | Sang 9mm: Boksu / Boksu Prime |
Prestige Master: 56 to 1,000
Finish Prestige 10 and your level keeps climbing past 55 instead of resetting. Rewards land every five to ten levels up to 99, then every 25 levels to 1,000.
- Instant reward: the "Paragon" Operator skin for Park and an orange level colour.
- Levels 60 to 90: a loading screen, an emblem, a charm, a sticker and the "Master Renegade" Han 86 blueprint at 90.
- Level colours: Navy at 100, then new colours every 25 levels, including multi-colour and animated ones.
- Legacy icons: from level 100, every 100 levels unlocks a set of Prestige icons from past Call of Duty games.
- Level 1,000: Prestige Legend. Activision is keeping those rewards classified.
Three Prestige systems, not one
Player Prestige is the one covered here. Weapon Prestige is separate: max a gun, reset it to level 1, and chase the Pyroclast camos. DMZ Operator Prestige is separate again, trading gear and DMZ Cash for permanent Traits on one Operator.
That last one has nothing to do with your Soldier Rank. Our Trait Points guide covers what it costs.
Every Prestige is another climb to 55
Each Prestige is the same 1 to 55 track, so the level 55 route works every time. DMZ XP keeps counting toward it too.
We boost Soldier Rank on your own account from any level to any target up to 55, Team up on any platform or piloted on PC. Every unlock earned on the way stays with you. Got questions first? The FAQ on our MW4 page covers how Team up and piloted orders work.
Questions players ask
Can I switch from Classic to Regular?
Yes, at the start of each new Prestige. You pick a track every time you enter the next Prestige level, so one Classic run doesn't commit you.
Do I lose my camos when I Prestige?
No. Activision lists level unlocks and Create-a-Class as what Classic resets, and camos come from weapon levels and challenges. Only Weapon Prestige resets a gun's level.
Does DMZ XP count toward Prestige?
Yes. DMZ XP feeds the 1 to 55 Player Progression, and every Prestige runs on that same track. It never works the other way: multiplayer XP doesn't raise your DMZ level.
