Play Modern Warfare 4's campaign on Regular if you want the story, and Veteran if you want the challenge and the Veteran Completer calling card in one run. Realism unlocks after your first finish, and YOLO only after Realism. The completion rewards are the same on every difficulty.
That last point is the one most players miss. The eight Operators, the tokens and the cosmetics don't care how hard you played; only the Elite calling card sets do. Checked against Activision's Campaign Early Access and Ready for Launch posts, plus notes from early access players.
All six difficulties
| Difficulty | How you get it | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Recruit | From the start | The easiest setting, built for the story |
| Regular | From the start | The intended balance |
| Hardened | From the start | Enemies push harder |
| Veteran | From the start | Tougher, more accurate enemies; you go down fast |
| Realism | Finish the campaign on any difficulty | Veteran with a stripped-back HUD |
| YOLO | Finish the campaign on Realism | Realism with one life for the whole campaign |
The Realism and YOLO rows come from early access players, not Activision. They describe YOLO the same way: die once, or fail an objective, and you're sent back to the first mission, Mayhem, whatever mission you were on.
The rewards don't scale
Finishing missions pays out sixteen rewards in a fixed order, and Activision's list ties none of them to difficulty:
- Eight base Operators: Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park.
- Five tokens: three Double XP and two Double Weapon XP, usable once multiplayer launches.
- Three cosmetics: the "No More Rules" calling card, the "Ready Line" loading screen and the "Gone Dark" emblem.
All sixteen carry into multiplayer and DMZ. If those are what you're after, Recruit gets them as surely as Veteran. Save the tokens for a full objective match; our level 55 guide explains why.
Where difficulty does matter
Activision's Elite Campaign Mastery category has three Mastery Sets: Veteran Completer, Realism Completer and YOLO Completer. They're the only campaign rewards tied to how hard you played, and finishing every challenge in a set pays an animated Mastery Calling Card.
- Veteran Completer: one Veteran run. It also unlocks Realism, since any finish does.
- Realism Completer: one Realism run, which is also what unlocks YOLO.
- YOLO Completer: finish YOLO, which means the whole campaign without dying. The bragging-rights set.
Which one to pick
Regular
The pace the campaign was built around. Pick Recruit instead if you just want the cutscenes and the Operators.
Veteran
The Veteran Completer card and the Realism unlock in a single playthrough. The best trade for most players.
Realism, then YOLO
Two more full runs at the hardest settings. Worth it for the cards; nothing else changes.
You can change difficulty from the pause menu during the campaign. Early access guides warn it can affect achievements tied to that difficulty, so if you're after a card, stick with one setting from start to finish.
Before you start a hard run
- Patch first: the launch patch fixed a progression blocker in the Hotel sequence of Counter Attack. Make sure you're updated before a long Veteran or Realism attempt.
- Learn the missions on Regular: a first run on Regular costs you nothing, since the rewards are identical. You'll know where the walls are when you go back on Veteran.
- Plan YOLO separately: one death resets the whole campaign. Treat it as its own project, not a third pass.
Want the hard runs done for you?
We clear the full campaign or any single mission on your account, piloted on PC, on Regular, Hardened, Veteran or Realism, and every reward lands on your account. YOLO isn't on the order form; open a ticket for a quote. Questions first? The FAQ on our MW4 page covers piloted orders.
Questions players ask
Do I have to finish on Veteran to unlock Realism?
No. Finishing the campaign on any difficulty, Recruit included, unlocks Realism. Only YOLO needs a specific run, and that's Realism.
How long is the MW4 campaign?
Sixteen missions. Players who finished it in early access put a first run at around eight to nine hours on the default difficulty. Veteran and Realism take longer.
Do campaign rewards work in DMZ?
Yes. Activision says every completion reward carries into multiplayer and DMZ at launch, including the eight Operators and the five tokens.
