Every DMZ Operator in Modern Warfare 4 levels up on their own, through 18 Dog Tag ranks from Steel I to Onyx III, and each rank pays one Trait Point. That is the whole system in a sentence. The 18 points go into three Trait Trees, and at Onyx III the Operator can Prestige for a permanent Trait.

What catches people out is that this track is separate from everything else. Your DMZ Player Level, your Soldier Rank and your Operator's Dog Tag are three different bars, and only the Dog Tag feeds Traits. Checked against Activision's DMZ Deep Dive Part 2 FOB guide (9 October) and the Ready for Launch progression post.

The 18-rank ladder

RankDog Tag levels
Steel I to III1 to 3
Bronze I to III4 to 6
Silver I to III7 to 9
Gold I to III10 to 12
Damascus I to III13 to 15
Onyx I to III16 to 18

The Dog Tag is visible in your Loadout, and it is the trophy rival Operators take when they kill you and exfil. Its rarity tells them how far you'd climbed. It also shows your Bounty status and your Operator kill count, so a Gold tag with a bounty on it makes you a target worth hunting.

How Dog Tag XP is earned

The same DMZ XP that raises your Player Level (our DMZ levelling route covers how to earn it fast) raises the Operator's Dog Tag, with one difference: Activision ties the Dog Tag level-up to the exfil. A strong deployment can level the tag more than once, and Trait Points earned after an exfil are waiting at the Operators station or the Traits side menu.

  • Deploy with the Operator you want to build. Points belong to whoever earned them. Switching between three Operators splits the XP three ways.
  • Exfil to bank the rank. Player Level XP is kept even on death. Activision's FOB guide describes Dog Tag level-ups and their Trait Points arriving after a successful exfil, so treat a run that dies at the chopper as account progress first and Operator progress second.
  • Budget a deployment per point early on. An early-access screenshot showed a Steel II Operator needing a little over 20,000 XP for the next point, roughly one good deployment. Expect later ranks to ask for more; Activision hasn't published the curve.
Three trees, 22 Traits each, 18 points to spend: enough for two full trees, never all three. · Open full size

Spending the points: three trees, nine picks each

Each tree holds 22 Traits: six Major Traits that are always visible, and 16 Minor Traits that are randomised and only appear once you've unlocked the Major Trait beneath them. Your first point in any tree buys that tree's random starter Minor Trait. After that you climb branch by branch, one pick per branch, and every pick is locked in for good.

Nine picks completes a tree. With 18 points you can finish two trees, or spread across all three. There is no respec short of Prestige, so plan the Operator before the first point.

Warfighter

Fight longer

Adrenaline Burst resets tactical sprint on a kill, Quick Fix shortens regen after one, Combat Resistance blunts explosives, and Possum is a once-a-match self revive from death.

Scout

Loot richer

Investor extracts more cash, Container Looter and Hostile Looter add drops, UAV Upgrade turns UAVs into Advanced UAVs, Field Crafting prints from raw resources in the field.

Survivalist

Die less

Free Revive repairs your first wound, Faster Revive and Numb the Pain speed squad pickups, Die Hard auto-calls exfil from Last Stand with no bleed-out timer.

Which tree first

Scout if you're levelling for the base: more cash and more ingredients per deployment compound into every FOB upgrade. Survivalist if you run solo or with randoms, because Free Revive and Die Hard turn a death into an exfil. Warfighter is the tree for Lieutenant and Commander hunters who need to win sustained fights.

A common pattern is nine into Scout, then nine into Survivalist. A full Warfighter Operator is a second-slot luxury once your first Operator has paid for the base.

MIA, rescue and what you can lose

If the Operator dies in a deployment they go MIA and can't deploy until you pay DMZ Cash from your Bank to bring them back. Rescue restores their Dog Tag rank, every Trait and any unspent points. The price scales with Trait Points, so an Onyx Operator is an expensive one to lose.

  • Dismissing resets everything: a dismissed Operator starts again at Steel I with zero Traits, except Permanent Prestige Traits, which survive dismissal.
  • Cash is shared, Traits are not: your Bank, resources and ingredients belong to all your Active Duty Operators. Only the Dog Tag, Traits, Backpack and Loadout are per Operator.
  • Slots are locked: an Operator stays in their slot until dismissed, and you can't run the same Operator in two slots.

Operator Prestige: 18 points, then the sacrifice

At Onyx III with 18 Trait Points the Operator can Prestige, provided they aren't MIA. Prestige wipes their Traits and gives a random Permanent Prestige Trait that stays with that Operator through dismissal, slot changes and skin changes. Each Operator can hold three, and a fourth Prestige offers a swap.

The gear and cash go in alongside the points:

  • First Prestige: two weapons with three attachment slots, a Rare plate carrier, a Rare backpack, four Rare printer ingredients and 200,000 DMZ Cash.
  • Second Prestige: two weapons with four attachment slots, Epic carrier, Epic backpack, four Epic ingredients and 300,000 DMZ Cash.
  • Third and every one after: four-slot weapons, Legendary carrier, Legendary backpack, four Legendary ingredients and 500,000 DMZ Cash.

Anything else sitting in the Loadout or Backpack when you Prestige is lost too, so strip the Operator first.

Want the points without the deployments?

We level the Operator you name, Team up on any platform or piloted on PC, from wherever they are to any target up to the 18-point cap. The points are left unspent so you pick the Traits yourself, and every unlock on the account stays yours. Got questions first? The FAQ on our MW4 page covers how Team up and piloted orders work.

Questions players ask

Do I have to spend Trait Points before Prestige?

No. Prestige needs 18 points earned, not spent. Activision recommends spending them, since unspent points are wiped with the rest at Prestige.

Does my DMZ Player Level reset when an Operator Prestiges?

No. Operator Prestige is tied to one Operator and touches nothing else: not your DMZ level, not your Soldier Rank, not your other Operators.

Does a Prestiged Operator keep their Dog Tag rank?

No. Activision says you earn Trait Points over again from scratch after Prestige, which means the Dog Tag goes back to the start of the ladder. The Permanent Prestige Trait is what you keep.

What happens to an Operator's rank if their Dog Tag is taken?

Losing the physical tag to a rival clears your bounty status. The rank and Traits stay with the Operator, and rescue brings them back to Active Duty intact.
