Recon is the class most players level by accident and the one you should level on purpose. It's not the sniper class - or rather, sniping is the expensive way to level it. The cheap way is a $75 pair of binoculars, no level required, that pays 25 Recon XP every time you mark an enemy and another 150 when that enemy dies. It doesn't matter who kills them; with three factions on the map, it usually won't be you. This guide is the spotting loop, and when it's worth adding the rifle.
How class XP works in WARDOGS
There's no class select. You have all six tracks - Assault, Medic, Recon, Support, Driver and Pilot - at once, and the one that levels is whichever your gear and actions feed that life. Every weapon, tool and vehicle in the vendor is tagged to exactly one track (hover the tile and it tells you), and every teamplay action pays a specific track too. Your Wardog level isn't a separate bar: it's the six class levels added together, and it's what gates armour, helmets, backpacks, ammo types and the heaviest vehicles.
Two things follow from that. First, the XP follows the item, not your intentions - a "recon player" holding an assault rifle is levelling Assault. Second, since Wardog level is a straight sum and the early levels are cheap, six shallow tracks beat one deep one: Season 1's curve is unchanged below level 6, then slows, with level 10 at 35,000 cumulative XP, 20 at 250,000 and 50 at 1,000,000. Taking every class to 10 costs a fraction of taking one class to 30, and hands you the early unlock on all six ladders.
What the Recon class actually does
- Spotting. Mark an enemy player, vehicle, FOB or supply crate through binoculars: 25 XP immediately, 150 more when it's destroyed. Marks also put the target on your team's minimap.
- Long-range kills. Sniper rifles, marksman rifles and the compound bow are Recon-tagged, so kills with them feed the track.
- Intel gear. The Monocular at Recon 2 speeds up marking; the Rangefinder at 8 adds distances. The serious scopes are Recon unlocks too - the 6-10x MRAD is $40,000 one-off in Season 1.
The starting Scout Rifle TD is a $1,100 break-action that won't reliably drop an unhelmeted player with a headshot. Don't try to snipe your way to Recon 5 with it - spot your way there and unlock the SKS ($25,000 one-off), then the Mosin at 10.
The core Recon loop
Step 1 - Binoculars in the specialist slot. $75. They fit alongside any loadout, so this loop works whatever else you're doing.
Step 2 - Find a vantage point over the Control Zone. High ground with a view of the fight, out of the fight. The zone is where every enemy is heading, so it's where every mark is.
Step 3 - Mark everything that moves. Players, vehicles, FOBs, crates. Each mark is 25 XP now and 150 later, and a marked vehicle that gets IED'd pays the same as a marked player.
Step 4 - Shoot only what's safe. Once you have the SKS, take the shots that don't give your position away. A Recon kill is good XP; a dead Recon player is a lost rifle and a walk back.
Step 5 - Move when they move. The zone shifts; so does the vantage point. Mark on the way.
Best XP method for Recon
Spot from the rim of the Control Zone while your team fights inside it. The maths is why: a mark that gets killed is 175 XP for $0 of risk, and a busy zone produces dozens of them a match. Kills are a bonus on top, not the plan. The most efficient Recon loadout in the game is binoculars plus a defibrillator - Recon from the marks, Medic from the revives, both from the same rock - and it's what a lot of top Wardog levels are built on.
What wastes Recon XP: holding an assault rifle (that's Assault XP), sniping from somewhere with nothing to mark, and dying with a $25,000 unlock's worth of rifle because you took a fight instead of a mark.
Quick checklist
- Binoculars: $75, no level, every loadout
- Rim of the Control Zone, high ground, out of the fight
- Mark players, vehicles, FOBs, crates - 25 XP now, 150 on death
- Skip the Scout Rifle TD; spot to Recon 5 and unlock the SKS
- Monocular at 2, Rangefinder at 8
- Binoculars plus a defib is the best two-track loadout in the game
FAQ
Does it matter who kills the target I marked? No. Any player on any team finishing the target pays you the 150 XP.
Do sniper kills count if I'm not "playing Recon"? There's no class select. A kill with a sniper or marksman rifle or the compound bow is Recon XP whatever else you're carrying.
Is Recon good for cash as well as XP? Yes - a marked target that a teammate kills also pays cash. The cash farming guide covers spotting as an earner.
When should I buy a real scope? After the SKS, and only when you're reliably making kills. The 6-10x scopes are $40,000-plus one-off unlocks; the binoculars have already done most of the levelling by then.
Will these numbers change? Probably. BULKHEAD has said progression beyond the first twenty or so levels will be tuned per season, and the Season 1 curve already differs from the beta's. The per-action values here are community-confirmed as of 12 September 2026; we'll update this guide when a patch moves them.
Want to skip the grind? The Class XP Boost levels Recon for you: pick Recon as the class when you order. We deliver it by logging into your account, which BULKHEAD's rules count as account sharing, so read what that risks first. The loops above earn the same XP with no risk to the account, and everything else we sell for WARDOGS is on the Wardogs page.
